In the excavations conducted in 1877-1878 at the Bergama archaeological site in Bergama district of Izmir province, under the direction of German engineer Carl Humann, reliefs of the Bergama Zeus Altar (Altar) were found.
The Bergama Zeus Altar was transported from the Ottoman Empire to Germany by ships and put in the Berlin State Museum. This magnificent altar, which was repaired in the museum, was taken to Russia during the Second World War and returned to Germany after the war, gave the museum its name. It has been observed that Humann had misleading correspondence with the Ottoman Government regarding taking the altar to Germany.
The Altar of Pergamon Zeus, also known as Zeus Altar, was built by the King of Pergamum in BC. It is a victory monument built in order to immortalize the victories they won over Galatians (Celts) between 165 and 156. This monument is dedicated to Zeus, the chief god in Greek mythology, and his daughter Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom. The “War of the Giants” skillfully crafted on the reliefs on the marble altar is described.
The Battle of the Giants Object recreates the dramatic scene in which Zeus is positioned in the center, which has an important place among the Zeus Altar reliefs. In this battle scene between Zeus and the Giants, the characters are embroidered on different layers of glass in a chronological pattern. Zeus, whose defeated giant depictions will be behind, and who will prevail in all his glory, is positioned in front.
The Bergama Zeus Altar is exhibited today in Germany, at the Pergamon Museum. In our country, only the foundations of the Zeus Altar remained in the Bergama acropolis.
All of the relief designs on the War of the Giants Object are decorated using gold and antique paints. The base is made of beige marble.
