Ottoman weaving became the inheritor of the art of weaving by using the characteristics of its geography before producing its unique products, and took a very important place in the political, economic, social and commercial life of the Ottoman Empire. The main influences in Ottoman Weaving Art come from the Anatolian Seljuks and Principalities period weaving. The application of the drawn patterns was carried out only by master weavers. According to the Ehl-i Hiref notebooks in the Ottoman archives, weavers were the most crowded of the guild organizations of the period, and they formed hirefs such as “velvetist”, “kemhacı”, “futacı”.
In the Ottoman art of weaving, Seljuk motifs were used from the 15th to the 20th century, and numerous compositions were created with stylized flowers of Far Eastern origin called lotus, palmette and Hatayi. Although the woven works are easily worn out compared to other art products due to their structure and technical features, information about Ottoman fabrics can be obtained from the 15th century. Information on fabric and weaving patterns comes from various sources, miniatures and the careful storage of the clothes of the Ottoman sultans.
An important collection of Turkish fabrics and velvets is exhibited in the Topkapı Palace Museum. In addition, there are fabric collections belonging to the Ottoman period in Konya Mevlana Museum, London Victoria Albert Museum, Edinburgh Royal Scotch Museum and Paris Louvre Museum.
The patterns on the Tulip Woven Vase were created from faults and tulip motifs, inspired by a fabric from the late 16th or early 17th century, from the Ottoman period in the Arthur M. Sackler Collection of the Harvard University Art Museum.
